For The Ages
In the vein of How Green Was My Valley beating out Citizen Kane for Best Picture in 1941, the 81st Annual Academy Awards will always be remembered as the time The Reader pooped on The Dark Knight's chances to make history.

I completely agree.
but you know what I think happened? with the academy's nomination process of ranking nominees 1 through 5 (with the "1"-votes weighing more than the "5"-votes), a majority of the academy probably placed TDK in the fourth or fifth position (while excluding the reader). meanwhile, those in the sizable minority that LOVED the reader ranked it as their first choice--pushing it in over the former.
the nominees for editing should have been those for best pic. shame, shame, shame.
